Mazda has hit the mark with its CX-50, which continues to grow in popularity since its market debut. To further enhance the lineup, the Japanese automaker is introducing a hybrid variant for 2025. This addition gives the compact SUV everything it needs to appeal to a wide audience. Let's dive deeper into this exciting new version.

A Strong Position for 2025

The Mazda CX-50 is in a very comfortable position for 2025. In addition to its standard engine options and performance powertrain, the Japanese automaker now offers a hybrid powertrain. As always, Mazda has achieved the perfect balance between driving pleasure and efficiency, delivering one of the best gas-electric engine combinations on the market. However, that's just one of many factors that make the 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid one of the most compelling compact SUVs available.

Trim Levels and Pricing

While the base 2025 Mazda CX-50 starts at $39,950, the hybrid version has a starting price of $42,950. For this amount, you get a very comprehensive standard equipment package, including a 10.25-inch multimedia display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, all-wheel drive, and more. The KURO trim level, priced at $44,850, adds unique features that give it a more menacing look. Finally, the GT version starts at $48,350, making it particularly attractive. Most comparable competitors' models exceed $50,000. The GT trim includes 19-inch wheels, heated rear seats, an electrochromic mirror, and a host of premium features.

Category and Competition

The mainstream compact SUV segment is one of the most competitive today. Big names like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape dominate this space. However, Mazda has played its cards well by keeping the CX-5 alongside the CX-50. Adding a hybrid variant to the CX-50 makes it even more competitive and appealing, especially since this hybrid option isn't prohibitively expensive. In my opinion, Mazda may struggle to keep up with demand, as this vehicle is likely to be highly sought after in the coming months.

Competitors: Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4.

Design and Technology

Aside from the small hybrid badge on the front fenders and tailgate, it's hard to distinguish the hybrid version of the CX-50 from the regular model. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it allows buyers to choose their preferred version based on what's under the hood. Furthermore, the Mazda CX-50 is an aesthetically pleasing vehicle. Its muscular and serious design turns heads, and its excellent palette of colors deserves attention.

The interior of the 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid is spacious, comfortable, and cleverly designed, making it more functional than many of its competitors. My only criticism is the placement of the multimedia system's screen.

As for technology, the hybrid CX-50 lacks nothing. It includes all the safety, comfort, and entertainment features you could wish for. Its available Bose sound system is particularly noteworthy.

Performance

The two other engine options available for the Mazda CX-50 are among the best on the market, and Mazda follows the same successful formula with the hybrid version. It combines a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with multiple electric motors, delivering a total output of 219 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque. The power is transmitted to all four wheels via a CVT. Where this powertrain excels is fuel efficiency, achieving just 6.2 L/100 km, making it as economical as a subcompact car.

Weak Points

  • No luxury trim paired with the hybrid powertrain.
  • Slightly underpowered, especially for passing maneuvers.

Strong Points

  • Exceptionally efficient and economical hybrid powertrain.
  • Well-equipped and eye-catching design.

Signature Feature

The 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid offers a one-of-a-kind experience in terms of driving pleasure and build quality, setting it apart in its class.

Final Thoughts

There was a time when simply offering a hybrid powertrain made a vehicle stand out from the competition. That's no longer the case today, which is why the CX-50 Hybrid has a significant advantage over its rivals. The model is already compelling on its own, and the addition of a hybrid powertrain brings it even closer to perfection.
